Experienced Practitioner Assessment (EPA)

The Experienced Practitioner Assessment (EPA) provides an alternate pathway to registration for practitioners with an appropriate academic qualification in architecture and at least 7 years' experience providing architectural services on complex projects as a primary decision maker. At least 12 months’ relevant professional experience must be in Australia within the last 3 years. Candidates are assessed against the full suite of 60 Performance Criteria from the 2021 National Standard of Competency for Architects from the competency profile for ‘At the point of registration’.  Assessment of applications is conducted via an administrative review for eligibility verification, followed by a panel-based Competency Assessment Interview.

Upon successful completion of the EPA candidates can apply for initial registration as an architect in NSW by completing Form 01 - Application for Initial Registration as an Architect in NSW

The NSW ARB has recently taken on direct management of this program from the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) and is currently reviewing program eligibility, submission and assessment requirements. We anticipate providing an update in December 2024 on the timeline for re-commencement of the EPA program in NSW, with applications for the 2025 program expected to open in February 2025.

Note that while the AACA manages EPA applications for most states, as of 1 July 2024, all EPA candidates residing in NSW must apply through the NSW ARB.
