A study of the architecture of art centres in Australian Aboriginal communities. More than just a place for painting, art centres are identified as important community spaces for keeping Culture strong, sharing knowledge, building social unity and creating a way to generate an independent financial income.
This report celebrates the architecture of some of the most unique and significant cultural and creative spaces in Australia. The author identifies that two-way knowledge sharing in the design of art centres has resulted in exciting and resilient architecture. Some examples are community led adaptations of existing town infrastructure, others are new, large scale buildings designed through a close collaboration of community and architect.
This report aims to drive a broader conversation about the role of architecture for community and creativity. It is hoped that the included information and images can serve as a reference point for community and designers alike.
