Proximity: Lines through time

An exploration of how we, in Sydney, can adopt a more assertive approach when designing in proximity to our valued buildings. This study focuses on ‘intervention’, or a very specific type of project in which an architect is required to add to an existing historic building - or create a new infill building - within an existing historic streetscape. It explores architectural responses to heritage contexts across Europe and within Melbourne and Sydney.
The second part of this report is a study of the architecture of Carlo Scarpa and Enric Miralles through the lens of the principles of heritage and conservation, in order to assess the implications for architects working in a historic context today.
