Rest Stops and Viewpoints
Remote Communities, Community Development, Aboriginal & Indigenous Architecture
Australia
Throughout regional and remote Australia, small ubiquitous structures such as toilet blocks, shade shelters and viewing platforms are often situated in terrific natural beauty along spectacular transport routes. Yet the design of these structures is disappointingly tired and repetitive. This research builds a case for a new network of small public projects in regional NSW to replace ageing infrastructure with thoughtful sites of connection to land and culture.
The report includes a detailed analysis of international examples of similar projects in Norway and Scotland, key recommendations, and a summary of progress to date working with NSW government stakeholders towards a timely initiative, the NSW Scenic Routes.
